The Green Future Social and Environmental Justice Network (GFSEJN) is writing to express our deep concern and outrage regarding the recent violent clashes between taxi operators and Uber drivers in Soweto, Pimville.
We condemn in the strongest possible terms the barbaric actions of some taxi operators who took the law into their own hands, resorting to violence and intimidation. We also expect more from taxi owners, who failed to show up timeously to address the situation and calm their drivers. Such actions only exacerbate the situation and put innocent lives at risk.
We further condemn the government’s failure to convene relevant stakeholders, including Uber operators and taxi operators, to address the issues and find a peaceful resolution. The lack of dialogue and engagement has contributed to the escalation of violence. If left unchecked, this situation has the potential to spread to other provinces, sparking further violence and instability across the country.
Government’s failure to create job opportunities
The transport industry is a vital sector that requires careful management and regulation. The government’s failure to create job opportunities in this industry has contributed to the tensions and conflicts between different operators. We urge the government to prioritise job creation and economic development in the transport sector.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the Uber driver who lost his life in the recent violence. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find strength during this difficult time.
We call on the residents of Soweto, and indeed all South Africans, to unite and reject violence as a means of resolving conflicts. We urge everyone to remain calm and peaceful, and to work together to find solutions to the challenges facing our communities. If we fail to address these issues collectively, we risk escalating the situation to other provinces, which would have far-reaching consequences for the country. Let us promote dialogue, understanding, and non-violent conflict resolution.
