Fahrenheit 2010:
Will the World Cup make us, or break us?
Tuesday 4 May
Venue: Senate House Basement 2 lecture theatre
Wits University Main Campus
Time: 18h00
The football World Cup is upon us, and excitement is mounting in the country. Many hail this as a unique opportunity to unite the nation, whatever the performance of our national team. Negative and at times outrageous publicity from some of the British and German press, regarding crime, Malema and impending earthquakes (!), have further contributed to national bonding across the spectrum. Others, however, are caught between love of the game, and concerns about whether this spectacle, which has cost our country billions of rands, will make us or break us financially. Are ‘first world’ events, like the World Cup or Miss World pageants, really what we should be focussing on? Or should pressing developmental needs be our priority? Or are the two not mutually exclusive?
Come and watch a recent documentary that contains insightful interviews from both sides of the debate, and make your own voice heard.
